The building was the administrative offices of the waterway for the I&M Canal, in 1972 it was recognized by the National Park Service with a listing on the National Register of Historic Places. Now operated by the Will County Historical Museum and Research Center, it is still part of the I&M Canal Heritage Corridor. The Will County Historical Society exists so that people and organizations can learn about the rich history of Will County. At the museum, you can tour a Victorian Doctor’s office, a vault, and a 19th century Heritage Village, as well as learn about the past of Will County. Through the year the Will County Historical Museum and Research Center hosts events such as Lockport's Old Canal Days, Ghost Tours, and the Heritage Village Apple Festival to keep the past alive.
